Anthomania is Samantha Western's critique of the patriarchal view of gender binary with a particular focus on the extremes of the hyper feminine.

 

Anchored in the realm of gender politics, Samantha’s research specifically investigates the dwindling relevance of traditional binary gender, and the diminishing responsibility these binaries have in today’s discussions around gender roles and sexuality.

 

The intimate link between flowers and female stereotypes drives Samantha’s practice. Focusing on the romanticism of flowers, this work is part of a wider investigation and critique of binary gender, especially femininity. Acknowledging the impermanence of flowers, Anthomania counteracts tropes linked to the hyper using contrasting methods of exaggeration, bold imagery and colour.
